A Home for Hope; Abdul Wahid's story from Hardship to Happiness

shelter construction project.

Abdul Wahid, a 67-year-old daily wage worker, faced immense challenges as the sole breadwinner for his family of eight in Jawpalal village, located in the mountainous region of Roye-e-Doab District in Samangan province. Living in an area with extremely low temperatures, especially during harsh winters, Abdul and his family endured difficult living conditions exacerbated by the lack of proper housing.

However, Abdul was not alone in his struggles. The entire village faced similar hardships, making it clear that urgent action was needed. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, ActionAid, Afghanistan implemented the Transitional Shelter Construction and Shelter Repair/Upgrade project in Samangan. The project aimed to provide support to 1,217 vulnerable families, including internal returnees, female-headed households, families with disabilities, and those affected by natural disasters.

Abdul Wahid's family was fortunate to be among the eligible recipients of this project. ActionAid distributed $1,472 to each selected family to construct transitional shelters. A sense of gratitude and relief filled Abdul's heart as he expressed, "We do not have any problem right now; our problem was residential shelter, which ActionAid organization provided for us."

Throughout the project, ActionAid's dedicated staff members provided unwavering support, from the project's inception to its completion. They ensured that each step of the construction process was supervised, resulting in good quality shelters for all beneficiaries.

This project had a huge impact on Abdul Wahid and his family. Their living conditions improved greatly, and they finally had a safe and comfortable place to call home. They no longer suffered from the freezing cold and felt secure in their new shelters. Abdul Wahid and other villagers revelled in the warmth and security of their newly provided shelters.

The positive change brought about by this project had a profound effect on their lives. Abdul was grateful that his children could now grow up in a better environment, free from the hardships they once faced. They no longer had to worry about the cold weather because heating their shelter became easy and smooth.

With deep appreciation, Abdul and his community expressed their gratitude to ActionAid for the support and construction of the transitional shelters. The intervention significantly reduced their challenges and problems, allowing them to live in good conditions without fear or worries. They now embrace a life of improved well-being, filled with hope for a brighter future.
