ActionAid, Afghanistan successfully implemented the WBK CII project in Herat province. This project, which was funded by UNFAO, benefited 10,830 households across six districts. The project focused on job creation, infrastructure development, water management, and environmental sustainability.

Job Creation and Women's Empowerment: The WBK CII project created essential job opportunities, particularly for women in gabion weaving, promoting economic independence and empowerment.

Infrastructure Development and Environmental Impact: Across the six districts, the project constructed 42 check dams, 11 dry stone structures, and 50 road culverts. Additionally, 443,963 trenches were evacuated, resulting in improved water management, increased Kariz discharge, and replenished underground water sources.
The project fostered community unity as communities collaborated to clean roads, canals, and water resources. This not only enhanced the environment but also improved the economic situation of the involved communities.

Promoting Biodiversity and Environmental Efficiency: Communities were encouraged to broadcast wild plant seeds into the trenches, promoting biodiversity and environmental efficiency, thereby preserving the ecosystem, and benefiting the region's overall health.

Training for Sustainability: ActionAid Herat prioritized comprehensive training on project operation, maintenance, and environmental safeguards. This empowered communities to take ownership of the project, effectively manage infrastructure, and uphold environmental and social standards.

The WBK CII project, implemented by ActionAid, Afghanistan with the @FAO's support, had a transformative impact on communities in Herat.
