ActionAid, Afghanistan Responds to Herat Flash Floods with UNICEF-Supported WASH Assistance
Following the recent flash floods in Afghanistan’s western region, many villages in Herat were severely affected and urgent needs quickly emerged for safe water, hygiene supplies, and community support. In response to this crisis, ActionAid worked through local structures to deliver essential WASH assistance to affected households in the most impacted areas.
ActionAid, Afghanistan implemented a UNICEF-supported WASH response in Herat, distributing 200 family hygiene kits to 100 affected households across the districts of Kushk Robat Sangi, Pushtoon Zarghun, and Obe, helping families restore safer hygiene practices in the aftermath of flooding. To reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, households also received aqua tabs for water treatment, while hygiene promotion sessions and locally explained IEC materials (including emergency ) strengthened community awareness and improved daily sanitation behaviour. Across all activities, ActionAid prioritized inclusion and protection, ensuring dignified access for women, children, elderly people, persons with disabilities, and economically vulnerable families, while community volunteers and leaders supported planning, beneficiary selection, orderly distribution, and follow-up feedback.
