Improved Infrastructure Brings Relief to 850 Families in Ghor

Ghor, Afghanistan - More than 850 families in Kumrak village and surrounding areas of Charsada district, Ghor province, now have safer access to essential services through a newly completed flood protection project implemented by ActionAid Afghanistan with financial support from UNDP.
As part of the Cash for Work (CFW) program, the project included the construction of a 33-meter retaining wall and a 20-square-meter culvert to protect key roads from seasonal floods and erosion. These structures have improved mobility and secured vital access to the district center, which connects residents to education, healthcare, and markets.
“Before this project, floods cut us off for days. Now, we can travel safely even during heavy rain,” said Walid Ahmad, a local resident.
Implemented between April 6 and June 15, 2025, the project engaged 56 local workers, offering short-term employment and income to families facing economic challenges. With a USD 14,000 budget, the initiative addressed both urgent infrastructure needs and immediate livelihood support.
This project is one of four under the CFW initiative in Ghor, aimed at enhancing community resilience through local job creation and disaster preparedness.
Impact Highlights:
- 850 households directly and indirectly benefit from improved flood protection and road access.
- 56 local workers earned short-term income, helping them meet basic needs during a period of crisis.
- Critical infrastructure now reduces flood-related disruptions and long-term repair costs.
