ActionAid Completes Retaining Wall Project to Protect Homes and Farmlands in Ghor Province

Ghor Province, Afghanistan — ActionAid, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has completed a 140-meter retaining wall in Madrasa Village, Firozkoh District. This newly built structure is designed to protect approximately 500 homes, as well as agricultural lands and essential local infrastructure, from recurring flood damage. These flash floods have posed a critical threat to the livelihoods and safety of the local population.

The project also created short-term jobs, employing about 15 skilled and unskilled workers daily, with unskilled labor sourced locally. Residents have welcomed the effort and called for more cash-for-work programs to improve infrastructure and resilience.

This retaining wall project is part of a larger flood response initiative in Ghor Province. The broader plan also includes four major construction projects, the provision of 100 shelters, and the establishment of 9 community kitchens to assist flood-affected populations across the districts of Firozkoh, Murghab, Shahrak, and Charsadda districts of ghor province.
Through these collaborative efforts, ActionAid and UNDP are working to build safer, more resilient communities in one of Afghanistan’s most flood-prone regions.
