Empowering Female-Headed Households: Poultry Support Initiative in Jawzjan Province
In a bid to address food insecurity and empower female-headed households in the Aqcha and Qushtepa districts of Jawzjan province, a significant initiative has been launched under the FAO project GCP-AFG-106-USA-FAO. This project, aimed at bolstering the cash income of vulnerable communities, has commenced the distribution of live pullets and poultry support packages in these regions.
Amidst challenging circumstances exacerbated by severe drought, lack of employment opportunities, and soaring costs of essential goods in Afghanistan, rural residents often grapple with meeting their basic needs. These hardships frequently compel individuals from remote areas to migrate to urban centers or neighboring countries in search of better prospects, especially as the impacts of climate change and financial constraints further strain their livelihoods.
ActionAid Afghanistan, in collaboration with FAO, has stepped in to provide a total of 2,366 egg-laying chicken aid packages to female-headed households in the Aqcha and Qushtepa districts through the GCP-AFG-106-USA-FAO project. Each comprehensive package comprises 30 young chickens, 150 kilograms of feed, 3 feeders, 3 water troughs, and essential poultry equipment, equipping recipients with the tools necessary to kickstart sustainable poultry-based livelihoods.
These poultry assistance packages play a pivotal role in enhancing access to nutritious food for vulnerable smallholder households grappling with food insecurity. By ensuring the provision of quality feed and fostering livestock-based livelihoods, the project not only helps families improve their nutritional intake but also enables them to generate vital cash income and stimulate local food markets. Furthermore, participants have received valuable technical training, enhancing their access to crucial local veterinary extension services and empowering them to navigate challenges effectively.
Through these concerted efforts, the FAO project GCP-AFG-106-USA-FAO and its partners are making significant strides towards fostering resilience, empowering communities, and fostering sustainable development in the region.
